The newest game releases officially on November 13, but gamers who pre-order on PS4, Xbox One or PC will get access on November 9. Let’s take a closer look at Hitman 2 and the 10 things you should know before you decide to buy the game.

What’s Up With the Confusing Sequence Numbers?

You’re not crazy, this isn’t the second release in the Hitman series. In fact, it’s the 10th–if you count 2007’s Hitman Trilogy which contained three previously released titles from the series. Hitman 2 is the second version of the series reboot that began with 2016’s Hitman.

How Did the Last Version Rate With Critics?

Speaking of Hitman, the game rated pretty well with Metacritic. On PS4, it scored an 84, and on Xbox One it came in at 85. The PC version was in the same ballpark with an 83. That is likely to generate some high expectations for Hitman 2.

If you pre-order any version of Hitman 2, and you’ll receive instant access to Hitman: Sniper Assassin Mode. I’ll explain that a bit more in a second. Customers who pre-order the Gold or Collector’s Edition get the game on November 9.

What is Sniper Assassin Mode?

I’m excited about the prospects of this mode. It’s an online or offline co-op feature that challenges you and your squad with pulling off a variety of assassinations. There’s really not a lot of limitations to this concept. It’ll be interesting to see how far it’s pushed in this version, through DLC and into future releases in the franchise. Here is a look at a trailer for the mode:

What is World of Assassination?

In short, WOA is like a new engine for the Hitman series. The developer, IOI, promises WOA will deliver new enhanced worlds, people, weapons and overall immersion. It’s designed to be a concept that not only improves the newest release but also helps to link future titles and makes the transition and updates all the more seamless. The video below gives a detailed explanation of its plans and explains a few more ways that it impacts Hitman 2:

What Are Elusive Targets?

There are new assassination missions coming to Hitman 2. They are called Elusive Targets. These targets are temporary characters that players have one chance to kill and there is a limited time frame for you to assassinate them. Real-life actor Sean Bean will be the first ET. His in-game nickname is The Undying. He’ll be added to the game on Nov. 20. Below is a teaser featuring Bean.

What is Ghost Mode?

Another new mode coming to the Hitman series adds a competitive multiplayer angle. This is a 1-v-1 online mode that has you trying to eliminate your target as quickly as possible. Each player will control a version of Agent 47. Each kill is worth one point. To complete the kill, you don’t need to just assassinate the target, you also have to hide the body without it being immediately found. You lose points by killing innocents.

There will be Ghost Crates packed with disguises, weapons and more. The crates have a shared inventory of sorts. Meaning if you take an item out of the crate, that item won’t be available to your opponent. The goal is to earn five points before the other player. It’s important to know, you’re NOT killing your head-to-head opponent, you’re going after the same target, just in two different realities. The only interaction you have is through the use of Ghost Coins, which can be utilized to distract your opponent.

Take a look at the trailer:

What’s in the Legacy Pack?

All six of the locations from Hitman are included with the Legacy Pack in Hitman 2. That includes Paris, Sapienza, Marrakesh, Bangkok, Colorado, and Hokkaido. This is the first place where the WOA can be seen. It’s essentially a remastered look at the environments from the last version with the new progression system, improved combat A.I. picture-in-picture mode and higher difficulty levels.

Don’t Expect a Radically New Gameplay Experience?

This is a Hitman game, and that’s exactly what you should expect. The developers clearly weren’t looking to come up with new fangled ways to play the game. They believe in their overall system and this year’s game isn’t likely to stray too far from the proven formula. The early impressions of gameplay support this concept.

That said, there is value in delivering a consistent experience, and I believe that’s what Hitman 2 is set to deliver.
